O.K. so this site is now down.  The company got bought by Cisco. It was a cool little social networking platform that competed with Drupal and TypePad, Vox, Facebook and all those deal-i-os. And yes, the name “5-Across” was “inspired” by one of the others in the same market space, but I’m not gonna mention any names. Anyway, these small Silicon Valley companies are here today and gone tomorrow. C’est la vie, baby. C’est. la. vie.

So this site had two really cool flash elements. The company’s product was called “Connect” and the big guys behind the big desks wanted to capitalize on their connections (no pun) to their customers such as the NHL, MLB and some Daily Comedy Internet site. We drafted some flash animations around how the customer’s used the product to make money. “Invigorate Participation” was one of the NHL messages in the flash animation. Chill. I’m all over that NHL social network scene. And I don’t even follow hockey.

It was fun while it lasted. And I got to work with another old buddy from another corporate gig in my days when I was a serious gal, working for the man.

Client: GDR, a digital map company.

Sigh… a customer close to my heart because I have so much experience in digital map marketing and was hired because of that experience. I miss my days at that other company. Still, GDR’s project was fun because I got to work with an old pal from my geeked-out corporate life. Together, we produce a rad design while sharing some laughs about how fun it was to get lost in the offices of a digital mapping company. I still can’t get over that people are paid to drive around to get lost only to end up in a Starbucks somewhere at the cross roads of “Nowhere Road” and “Turn Back Now Street.”

This site is all in the family. I worked on it for my brother. He’s a ‘dot-net’ guru and built this really cool music platform on ASP.NET. Because of this site, I got to hob-nob with the big guns in the music meta data biz. ya, meta-data=song title, genre, etc. Betchya didn’t know there were big guns in that industry, or that “music meta-data” was even an industry at all, huh?

This company was waaaaaay ahead of its time before the i-shmods and zune’s were even glistening in the eyes of the corporate giants. I wrote a killer business plan for the company but sadly didn’t have the guts to implement it. Sigh. So many ideas. So little hutzpha. The fun thing about this project was the logo. My brother was cool about working strategically to get what he wanted and hiring a really awesome designer to do it, while I managed the creative direction. We had so many great designs, it was hard to choose just one.

Anyway, this is how I got my start in Web design and programming. I didn’t know jack about either. Ok, I knew something about design and marketing. The rest was by the seat of my pants. I got to make plenty of mistakes because, you know, when you do stuff for the family, its a given that it won’t be perfect.
