Spring Training

March 11, 2011
Posted in: Dogs | Reading Time: 3 minutes

Since her weigh-in on January 28, Juno lost 2.2 lbs. She was 30kg (66 lbs) and is now down to 29 kg (63.8 lbs), but that's still too high. She needs to lose 2 more kg (4 lbs).  When researching raw-feeding, I read that a 60 lb dog will roughly need about 500 grams of food per day. Obviously that is way too much for a dog like Juno. It was a huge eye-opener to discover that even when feeding raw, every dog is different and burns calories differently. So  for now she's on a pretty restricted diet of about 300-350 grams per day.

"I'm so famished, I don't know if I can make it. This looks like a good place to find a few extra calories."

Two pounds in the past 5 weeks is very slow going. When it comes to weight loss, slower is better. But she's now on the dreaded weight plateau. It's really hard to get the scale to start dipping again. So I'm on a mission. I'm determined to get her down to 27 kg. That's 59.5 lbs. I've never been able to get her below 60 lbs. Ideally, I'd love to see her at 58, but I'll aim low (or in this case higher) and shoot for 59.5. Between her restricted diet and all the jogging and off-leash hikes I'm determined to get her lean and mean.

The Biggest Loser!

Are you a quadraped* who needs to lose a few pounds? Join Juno in her goal to lose those extra pounds. Kick start your spring training and by summer you'll be in beach-fur-suit shape!

  • One Month- One Goal: Lose the most weight possible or reach your desired goal weight.
  • Win BIG: The biggest loser will win a toy and a healthy treat from Wild Dingo (Toy and treat to be determined.)
  • How to Enter: In the comments section below, enter your name, your current weight and your goal weight.   Weekly weigh-ins are not necessary, but the final weigh-ins are required to be entered in the comments section by May 9, 2011. You may participate in weekly weigh-ins by submitting weight in the comments section in this post. They will be added to the chart in the post below. Juno will be weighing-in at least twice during this contest.
  • Contest Runs for 2 month only, March 11-May 9, 2011.*  Contestants can enter at any time during that month.
  • Other Rules: Contestants need to lose at least 8% or more of their body weight. Reaching the goal weight within the 4 weeks is not required to win. Please be safe and consult a vet before determining if your pet should lose weight or participating in this contest. Wild Dingo is not responsible for contestants who become ill as a result of (too much) weight loss during this contest. This is for fun. Please use common sense and safety when applying any diet restrictions to your pet's nutrition.  The ultimate goal is to become much more aware of a healthy weight for your pet and to find an optimal balance between exercisee and diet. Wild Dingo reserves the right to change the rules to protect the saftey of the participants.
  • One more thing:  Please go SLOW! I don't expect Juno to reach her goal weight in 4 weeks.
  • *Contest open to all canine and felines. Bi-peds need not apply!

"I'm a lean, mean, eating-machine! Donnez-moi le baguette du pain avec beaucoup de beurre si vous plait!"

  1. *shoot* It's the bipeds around here who need to lose weight! Us quadrupeds are lean and mean (or at least lean; we're really giant marshmallows - in a personality sort of way). However, we'll be rooting Juno on!

  2. What a great idea! The boys are in great shape, but Ruby has a vet visit coming up and I know she was under weight when we adopted her, we'll check, she may need to lose a few -- she'd gladly walk more, it's me and the whole time thing... In any event, we'll be cheering Juno on!!

  3. Hmmmmm, any chance we can put this game in reverse and try to get Phantom to gain weight:) It won't happen, but we do keep trying.

Good luck with Juno's losing a bit more.

Woos ~ Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara

  4. Our girls aren't needing to lose any weight, but they want Juno to know that they're going to be getting out and getting their exercise and supporting her in their hearts. You can do it Juno!

  5. No diets for me! In fact momma is hoping that I might gain weight if she keeps forcing me to jog and build up my bottom muscles.

    Mango

  6. Go Juno! Mom doesn't think I need to lose any weight so can't participate in your contest but hope all that do have a very successful journey. 🙂

  7. Yay for Juno on the weight loss. You can get the rest off. 🙂 I can't wait to see how the contest goes. Mine are both a good weight right now so they can't enter. I completely forgot to answer your question on my blog about Storm's weight. She has definitely gained weight since going raw, but she's always been on the thin side so it's made her look much better. 🙂 She also eats a whole lot less than the suggested amount. Sibes are much more efficient at digestion than most other breeds. Keep up the great work!

  8. My scale broke so I can't tell you how much exactly I'm feeding Storm. I have a new one on it's way, but it's going to be a few days. When it gets here I will weigh her food and weigh her for you. 🙂 For now I've just been guesstimating based on how she looks. Storm is actually really easy to feed because if she's not hungry she buries it so I know I need to cut back. She has never been one to overeat. Anyway I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

  9. Oh no, not you too! A few of us just had our annual exams. I weighed in at 129 lbs, Samuel was 92 lbs and baby Khady was 48 lbs! So, mom said we are all on a diet! Samuel is having his thyroid re-checked though, cuz he might need his thyroid meds increased. But, as for me and my fat baby, we're now being forced to starve! This is just so unfair. I REALLY like food!

I wonder if I can turn my humans in for animal abuse for reducing my food intake.

  10. woooo Ok here go we are going to join you Juno.

    Khumbu - weight now 33.6kg
    Bruno - weight now 69kg

Aim is to get to the suggested breed top weight and take it from there.

    Male Siberian Husky - 27kg
    Male Leonberger - 68kg

Will have to take a trip to the vets to get weighed as hu'parents cant pick Bruno up to weigh him ha ha.

  11. Sibes are furry efficient food processors - we akhtually rekhwire less than what the 'books' say -

Of khourse, I'm just perfekht the way I am 😉

    Khould I enter my mom?

    Hugz&Khysses,
    Khyra

  12. Where do we bet on Bruno? He only needs to lose one kg., if we're reading the comments and chart correctly. Don't forget fat being converted to muscle with all that increased exercise means Juno will GAIN muscle weight even as she is getting in better shape.

Due to Abby's chronic pancreatitis, we're both on strict diets and are already at our optimum weights. Too bad mama can't say the same thing about herself. 🙂

    Good luck, Juno!

    Jed & Abby

  13. woooo I got caught stealing food again, hu'mum says I cant be that hungry on my diet. Guess I wont win at this rate if I keep stealing 😉
