Diary of a Dog Nut

This blog began in 2005 with a silly press release about my dingo, Maggie, and her nemesis, Monsieur Le Pew.  In 2008, I rescued the cracker, Loki. I never had a high drive working dog so I did what every new dog owner does when they are in over their heads with a busy dog. I adopted a second dog, a husky, to "keep him busy." I know, Internet, I know. I didn't actually make my life easier. I just had more work. Life with the cracker and the criminal was filled with adventures and hard life lessons. Juno wrote masticated the book on crime and punishment, while the cracker policed her misdemeanors.

For Roo

"Yum! Tastes like chicken!" "Princess, that was the chicken treat mom just advanced paid us for modeling work." We'll miss your clownish antics and zest for all things construction. May North of the Rainbow Bridge be filled with yellow tractors---all for you.

Sick Sense

One of the things I miss most about living in Switzerland is the ability to walk anywhere legally. For the first year there, I constantly felt like I was trespassing as hiking trails led us through quiet vineyards, cow pastures, farms and sometimes even close enough to people's homes you can see what they're having […]

Slippery When Wet

Two years away and a heavy rainy season has taken a toll on Nitwit Bridge. In the last month, I've slipped 4 times on this  the 40-foot high, 150 foot suspension bridge crossing. Obviously, none fatal, since I'm still here typing this. But enough to scare the bejesus out of me. Even the dogs tread very lightly […]

It's Not About the Drug, Silly

It's hard to believe a dog who exhibits such strength and confidence, ok, over confidence, can suddenly turn into a ball of mush, eyes filled with fear and looking to me make him feel better. Last weekend we had a big scare. Normally, the dogs have taken Interceptor for their heartworm medication. When we moved to […]

Some Things Never Change

The first official header I ever did for Wild Dingo in 2009 was a photo of these two, newly thrown-together siblings, snuggling, just like this. It seems some things never change. There's a great comfort in that. Because returning to a familiar place after living in an entirely different world for two years, changes you. […]

Bully Stick Therapy Fail

It's been raining torrential downpour for two days now. We braved a walk yesterday and came home soaked to the bones. Loki begged several times to turn around, while Juno lobbied for a long walk. She's happy outside, no matter the weather. Loki is much more affected by it and isn't happy inside or out. […]

There Goes the Neighborhood

"Our neighbors are pigs," said Mr. Wild Dingo. Now, we've lived in Santa Cruz mountains for many years and have had our fair share of neighbors with questionable habits such as decorating their garden with Budweiser cans or solving their leaking roofs with a blue tarp, every winter, year after year.   As attractive as those blue […]

Forest Friend

Often on our  forest walks in Lully and Morges, we would meet this lone gentleman soaking his feet in the river or walking the trails. He was a kind man, who always complimented the dogs. Especially since whenever we saw him from a distance, I'd recall the dogs so they wouldn't bother him. Only, he […]

Take Me to the River

I got lucky when we adopted Juno. And not because she's a Siberian (although that could be considered luck in itself). But because she's a little different from most Siberians. She comes when she's called, she sits when asked and will perform a multitude of other tricks deemed humiliating by most, ok all, Siberians.

We're So Over that Rainbow

"Something tells me we're not in Switzerland anymore, Princess." "Really? What clued you in Sherlock?" WARNING: Educational post to follow. Read at your own risk. Now that we're so over that rainbow and back to reality,  I want to share what we've learned from our experiences in preparing for a long overseas flight with dogs.
