Diary of a Dog Nut

This blog began in 2005 with a silly press release about my dingo, Maggie, and her nemesis, Monsieur Le Pew.  In 2008, I rescued the cracker, Loki. I never had a high drive working dog so I did what every new dog owner does when they are in over their heads with a busy dog. I adopted a second dog, a husky, to "keep him busy." I know, Internet, I know. I didn't actually make my life easier. I just had more work. Life with the cracker and the criminal was filled with adventures and hard life lessons. Juno wrote masticated the book on crime and punishment, while the cracker policed her misdemeanors.

Siberian Negotiations

Juno eyed her mom working in the herb garden through the morning mist. She raised her nose in the air, considered hunting for moles, but decided to head down the path to the orchard and help herself to an apple. While she enjoys playing with the treasures she picks from the tree, she prefers the […]

Flashback Friday: Canine Choir

Flashback to that time when Jim's pack of huskies taught Loki to sing whenever he hears a siren. Recently, Loki taught the local pack of coyotes to sing at the sirens. And they taught a second pack. So now we're treated to a surround-sound, spine-chilling opera of the Formosan-German Shepherd-California Coyote tabernacle choir every time […]

Scent of a Siberian

There's a new boy in the 'hood. While Loki was recovering from knee surgery, Juno got to know the new young stud on our walks. Orion was smitten with my kitten and always invited her to play. It didn't take long for Juno to fall hard for this fellow and now every time we walk […]

Mistaken Identities

Once again, Juno proves that she is really a German Shepherd in a Siberian Husky suit. Coming back from our walk, I unleashed the dogs once we got onto the pasture on our property. She immediately put her nose to the ground and followed a scent. As soon as we go to Upper Nitwit trailhead, we found […]

Glamorous Life

Per Dogtor's treatment orders, I had to flush the cracker's willie with Chlorhexidine to treat a small infection. He didn't love it, but he didn't try to bitey me. The cracker is getting soft in his older years. I could never get Loki to perform the roll over trick that Juno does. He's done it […]

Good to Go

On Monday, the cracker was given two thumbs up from his surgeon. Loki's re-check x-rays showed the bone is healed from the #TPLO surgery and there's no inflammation in the patella which meant he did not over-do himself during recovery. It's a miracle! Actually, he exceeded my expectations in staying quiet during recovery. I even […]

Happy Loki-versary!

This weekend we celebrated Loki's 8th year with us and his 9th (roughly) birthday. He's been one of the best teachers I've had in my life as he taught me how to listen, really listen, without words. Sure, his recent TPLO surgery put a huge dent in the wallet, but in the end, it only […]

Search & Rescue Ray Ban

Yesterday, I lost a great pair of Ray Ban sunglasses on a dog walk. Since my search dog, Loki, is on the down low recovering from TPLO surgery, I couldn't ask him to help find them. Both dogs are informally trained at finding objects scented like me on our trail walks since I'm always losing […]

Husky Garden Humor

"I think therefor, I Yam," laughs Juno as she mocks my plans for a vegetable garden this year. "Hard work doesn't harm anyone, but I do not want to take any chances." Juno bestows her garden work ethic as she seistas between the magnolia tree and flower bed. Meanwhile, my own work ethic is summed up […]

Sabbatical

"Cracker's Log 0062016. The humans call this a sabbatical. I'm not allowed to work or patrol the property. I may as well not be allowed to breathe."
